Vancouver Storage Units Can Help You Declutter Your Kitchen

Are you a foodie who loves to cook at home? If so, you have probably developed an impressive collection of kitchenware. Whether you live in a small apartment or a larger home, all of this kitchenware can quickly add up. This can create some problems, as there is only a limited amount of cabinets, drawers and shelf space in your kitchen. Many people want to keep their collection of kitchenware, but they simply do not have the space. Fortunately, there is a solution. If you find yourself running out of space in your kitchen, a Vancouver storage unit can help. By renting storage space, you will be able to declutter your kitchen while still keeping your collection intact.

Our Top Three Tips for Storing Kitchenware

  • Wrap Your Fragile Items in Protective Packaging

Most kitchen items are fragile. Whether you are storing glassware, plates or even pots and pans, you need to take extreme care when moving these things in and out of your storage unit. Fragile items should always be individually wrapped in the proper protective packing material. The material that should be used depends on the specific item in question. For example, if you are storing some sturdy old plates, you can feel confident wrapping them in newspaper. On the other hand, if you are storing antique glasses that were handed down by your grandmother, you may want to use the best bubble wrap on the market. If you have any questions about storing fragile items and selecting packing material, the storage experts at Iron Gate Storage would be happy to help.

  • Use Boxes

When possible, kitchen items should always be kept inside of a box or a bin. This is important for a couple of different reasons. Ultimately, this provides an extra level of protection for your items. You do not want anything getting lost or damaged. Additionally, boxes also make it much easier to keep your storage rental unit well organized. By neatly stacking your boxes on top of one another, you can maximize your space.

  • Know What’s in Your Unit

Finally, it is always recommended that you keep an inventory list of the items in your storage unit. Remembering every little item in your unit is difficult task. Why even bother trying? Instead, simply create a master inventory list. This will be an incredibly useful tool, and in the long run, it will probably save you money. After all, if you forget what is in your unit, you may buy something you do not even need.

Vancouver Storage Units Could Save Your Business Money

Creating and managing a business is never easy. In fact, even the world’s most successful companies often operate with narrow profit margins. If there is an easy opportunity to save your company money, you will no doubt want to take it. Many business owners in Vancouver have found that renting a self storage unit is a simple trick to save some extra money each year.

Three Ways a Self Storage Unit Could Help Your Bottom Line

Less Space Means Lower Rent

Does your business rent commercial space? If so, then you know that renting space in the Vancouver region is expensive, and the rent continues to rise across our region. It is worth considering: do you need all of that space? Are you using high-cost rental space to simply store infrequently used equipment or excess inventory? If that describes your company, there may be a better way. By renting a storage unit, you may be able to downsize the amount of commercial space you need. You can trade in high-cost commercial space for reasonably priced storage space. This can produce a tremendous amount of savings on a per square foot basis.

Lower Utilities Bills

Of course, rent is not the only space-related expense that business must pay. More commercial space generally means higher monthly utility bills. If you can limit your needed space, your utilities bills may be limited as well. This can produce major costs savings. If your company has a large amount of items that do not need to be on the site of your business, you may be better off keeping them in a storage unit.

More Efficiency

Finally, storage units can help Vancouver businesses stay well organized. An organized business is an efficient business, and an efficient business can become a profitable business. There are many different ways in which a storage unit can help your company achieve productivity. For example, a storage unit can help your company:

  • Save time: If you and your employees know exactly where all needed items are, a significant amount of time and energy will be no doubt be saved. This is critically important because at the end of the day, time is money.
  • Reduce the amount lost or damaged goods: Any important item that gets lost or damaged will need to eventually be replaced. In other words, lost items become sunk costs. Replacing an item comes right out of the bottom line of your business. While each little expense may be small, these costs will add up quickly over the long-term.

Oregon is one of the best states in the entire country for outdoor enthusiasts. There is almost no limit to the activities that are offered within our region. From watersports in the summer to skiing and snowboarding in the winter to hiking and camping throughout the year; Oregon offers something for everyone. Of course, as every outdoor lover knows, enjoying nature’s beauty can involve a lot of equipment. For many people in Oregon, there is simply not enough space at home to keep all of this gear. Fortunately, this is where a Beaverton self storage unit can provide a simple and cost effective solution.

What Can You Keep in Your Beaverton Storage Unit?

A storage unit is a great place to keep a wide array of different outdoor items. In our Beaverton storage units, outdoor lovers may choose to store:

  • Tents;
  • Coolers;
  • Boots;
  • Camping supplies;
  • Snowboards;
  • Skis;
  • Hiking equipment
  • Rock climbing gear;
  • Tarps;
  • Surfboard;
  • Kayaks;
  • Canoes;
  • Oars;
  • Life jackets;
  • Tools; and
  • Much more

Three Expert Tips for Storing Outdoor Equipment

1. Know How Much Space You Need

The first step to selecting a storage unit is to figure out exactly how much space you need. This can be a challenging process for first time storage renters. Determining how much storage space is required is not an intuitive process. In fact, far more stuff fits into a storage unit than most people realize. This is especially true with proper planning and organization. To select the right sized unit, the best thing you can do is to create a list of what you want to store. Then, you should get that list into the hands of one of our experienced storage managers. Our team can help review your list and find the perfect spot for you.

2. Use Labelled Boxes

Anything that can fit in a box should be stored in a box. The bottom line is that small and mid-sized items need to be put into boxes or bins for their own protection When these items are kept out in the open, they risk becoming lost or damaged. Additionally, by using boxes, you will be able to keep your unit well organized. As a last point, you need to make sure that you label all of your boxes. By doing this, you will be able to know what is inside a box without actually opening it. This will save you a lot of time in the long run.

3. Keep an Inventory List

Finally, you should always keep an updated inventory list of all of the items that are currently within your unit. Ideally, your list should also direct you to the precise location of each item. Do not assume that you will be able to remember what is in your unit. As time passess, remembering each thing becomes far more difficult than it initially seems.

Did You Inherit Property? An Orchards Storage Unit Can Help

It is always incredibly difficult to lose a loved one. Unfortunately, it is a difficult part of life that we all go through at some point. When it happens, it is time to focus on yourself, your family and your friends. The psychological health and emotional well being of everyone comes first. Of course, at this time, there are often some complex logistical issues that you will need to address. For example, you may have inherited a considerable amount of property from your loved one. An Orchards Vancouver storage unit can help you manage this complicated situation.

It Can Take a Long Time to Go Through Inherited Items

If you have inherited a large amount of property, you likely feel extremely overwhelmed. Do not worry; this is normal. In fact, many people report having similar feelings. The fact is, you will already have a lot to deal with at this time and you may not feel like you have enough time or space to sort through all that property. By renting a storage unit, you will give yourself all of the time or space that you need to give your loved one’s possessions the full attention they that truly deserve. If you have inherited many items, such as a parent’s entire estate, the things you inherited will likely fit into one of three categories.

  • Things to keep;
  • Things to sell; and
  • Things to throw out.

Without a storage unit, you may not have enough time to go through the estate to determine exactly which category each item belongs in.

How to Choose the Right Storage Unit for Inherited Property: The Two Questions to Ask Yourself

  • How Much Space Do You Need? Self storage units come in a wide variety of different sizes. At our Orchards facility, we will have a space available that fits your unique needs. When selecting a space, you need to find the perfect size. You should avoid overstuffing your unit, as that is how items get lost or damaged. At the same time, you do not want to pay for more space than you will actually need. Our experienced storage managers will be able to comprehensively assess your individual situation and can help you find your ideal storage unit.
  • Does the Storage Facility Have a Good Reputation? You should always pick a facility that has developed a good reputation within the Vancouver community. This means selecting a facility that offers proper security and well-maintained grounds and offers their services at a reasonable price. At Iron Gate Storage we operate many different facilities within the region and we have a proven track record of success.

Leaving Vancouver for a Temporarily? What to Do With Your Stuff

These days, many people find themselves having to leave home for a temporary work assignment. In fact, many of the new jobs created since the financial crisis eight years ago are in the form of contract or temporary employment. Whether you’re in the military, or your job otherwise requires travel on a regular basis, what to do with all your things, especially your valuable possessions, when you have to leave Vancouver can be perplexing.

If you have to leave Vancouver for a work assignment, placing your important belongings in a storage unit can provide you with peace of mind and security when you’re out of town. Not only will your belongings be safe, but being stored in a temperature- and pest-controlled unit will also prevent damage to sensitive items such as photographs, sensitive documents, antiques, etc.

Important Features for Your Storage Unit

When choosing a storage facility to store your belongings in while you are away for work, there are several features you will first want to ensure are in place, such as:

  • Security: video surveillance, a locked gate surrounding the facility, perhaps the option of individually alarmed storage units, on-site management, etc.
  • Short-term lease agreements: the length of time you may be on your work assignment varies and may not last a full year, etc.
  • Unit size: you will need a particular type of storage unit if you are looking to store a car, RV, boat, etc. People who live in heavily-populated cities often have no choice but to store their car when they go out of town because it could otherwise be towed if it is parked on the street for too long.

For many, a temporary work assignment means they only plan to take a suitcase that includes the bare necessities with them, so a larger storage unit—housing most-all of their belongings—is necessary (especially if that unit has to serve as a family storage unit for all the other members in your family).

If That Temporary Assignment Turns Permanent…

Even individuals who end up moving for a permanent work assignment often find that storing a lot of their possessions and only bringing the necessities with them initially can be helpful when they first get to their new location so that they can choose the perfect home before undertaking the move.

Storage Units in Downtown/Westside Vancouver

If you are getting ready to leave town for a work assignment, you likely have a lot on your mind. Making sure that your home isn’t vandalized should not be something you have to worry about. Come check out our storage units at your convenience—we offer the very best amenities to busy people who don’t have the time to worry about their belongings.

Growing Etsy Businesses in Vancouver Encountering Space Issues?

More and more people are deciding to start their own business on Etsy, selling their own creative, vintage, and/or handmade goods. In fact, the company has literally changed the way we shop for handmade gifts, turning 1,000 customers into 1 million in a very short time.

As these self-start businesses become more popular, the inventory of materials inevitably increases, and storing everything at home while you try to run a business out of that home can be tricky (especially if you sell larger items, like large sculptures or furniture, and you have thousands of customers). For many of these business owners, renting a storage unit is the only option in terms of running your business professionally and staying sane.

Spaces Ideal for Small Businesses

For those running a business who have simply run out of room and are looking for a storage space, many find that a larger storage unit—with 1,000 square feet or so—allows them to have both their shop and storage needs met in one spot. A 10×40 unit typically provides 400 square feet (approximately the size of a small garage), so smaller businesses can always start out with that space and upgrade if necessary. And for businesses that simply want to store off-season materials, even a 120 square foot space can work for them. Fortunately, the storage units offered have built-in flexibility—you can get a 10×20, 10×30, etc.—whatever makes the most sense for you and your business.

The Benefits – and Necessity – of Having a Storage Space

Having a storage space just for your shop also allows you to show prospective customers what you have in stock without involving your personal home, which can result in your business maintaining a more professional appearance, as well. It also allows you to purchase inventory materials in bulk, which can save small businesses a significant amount of money.

In addition, for any businesses dealing with furniture, appliances, documents, antiques, collectibles, photographs, electronics, candles, art materials, and other sensitive materials, note that it is absolutely crucial to have a climate-controlled space to store these items. Moisture, severe hot or cold temperatures, or even drastic changes in temperature can destroy certain materials and cost businesses owners a significant amount of money. Storage units also feature the ability to control for pests, which, if they get into your materials, can also cause destruction and money loss.

Renting Out Your Home in Vancouver

According to the National Multifamily Housing Council, more than 100 million American residents rent their current residence. That is nearly one third of the population. Needless to say, there is no shortage of renter no matter where you go in the States. More and more homeowners have realized this fact, too, as the current trend of home subletting has grown ever-more popular. The other two thirds of the population, even including many residents in Vancouver, are finding more opportunities to rent out their homes and have found the process to actually be rather lucrative.

There are several reasons why homeowners have been more and more inclined to do this. One of the most prevalent is the escalating mortgage situation. Though interest rates for home loans may still be low, the inability of Americans to make full mortgage payments continues to skyrocket. Renting out a living space has been one way of paying a mortgage until more financial stability is achieved. The rent payments have greatly offset the cost of monthly payments. Though there are myriad other reasons why more and more people are becoming landlords, the decision to this yourself may prove challenging without taking a few things into consideration.

Thing to Think About Before Subletting

Renting out your home can typically involve a significant time investment in terms of finding the right renters, the real work starts when you do find your tenant(s) and you have to start clearing out various possessions in order to prepare the house to be sublet. Even though a property manager can help you manage the property while you are gone, they can’t really decide what stays and what goes in terms of possessions that need to be put in storage. Remember that not only should valuable possessions be put away, but removing items and placing them in your storage unit before showing the home to prospective tenants can also help you get the space rented out (because there’s less clutter) and better represent how the rental will be available to the prospective tenants.

If you are subletting your home, make sure you also do your homework in knowing what the specific laws are in your area. Here in Vancouver, Washington, that law is the Washington State Residential Landlord-Tenant Act. It is important to take a damage deposit and make arrangements for automatic payments to be deposited into your bank account. You will also want to check in on your homeowner’s insurance policy to make sure that changes do not need to be made in order to accommodate subletting.

Storing Your Vehicle in Vancouver Over the Winter

Many people decide to store excess vehicles or their boats in storage during the winter in order to protect them from the cold weather. In preparing your vehicle to be stored, there are some important considerations to make (in addition to choosing the right storage location):

Pest prevention

Plug any exhaust pipes and intake valves in order to keep small animals out (using socks typically work). Also be sure to throw out any trash that has accumulated and could draw in pests. If you are worried about small animals making their way into the vehicle, placing drier sheets or mothballs inside the car can also serve as a deterrent. Avoid using mouse traps or anything else that could result in a dead animal being stored in your vehicle all winter long.

If you plan to steam clean the inside of the car, make sure you don’t do this right before storing it, as this can cause moisture buildup and mildew. If you are worried about moisture, leaving desiccant in the vehicle can help.

Cleaning and waxing your vehicle before storing it is very important in order to ensure that it stays protected for the winter. By getting rid of dirt and any tree sap, you help ensure that the paint is protected. It can also be helpful to use rubberized undercoating and spray a protective coat on any unpainted metal parts under your car, but make sure you do not use these materials near any exhaust pipes because they are flammable. It’s also a good idea to remove the windshield wipers so that they do not stick to the windshield, as well as invest in a quality car cover.

Do not use the emergency or parking brake during storage so as to avoid placing too much pressure to the brake pads and rotors. The parking brake could also end up freezing. Wedging wood blocks near the wheels can help if you are concerned about your vehicle rolling while in storage.

Fluids and Ventilation

It is important to top off all fluids, especially the gas tank, so that moisture does not build up while the vehicle is in storage. It’s also a good idea to change the engine oil before storing it and use fluid stabilizer to help prevent corrosion in the fuel lines and engine. It may also be wise to leave the window slightly cracked to allow for fresh air to circulate while the vehicle is in storage.

Tires and Battery

Make sure you increase the air pressure in your tires before you start the car, as tires lose pressure over time and due to temperature change. If you can get your car on a jack stand to take the pressure off the tires while it is in storage, that is ideal. Remember also to take the battery out before storing the vehicle so that it stays charged during the winter when the vehicle isn’t in use.

Renting Out Your Home in Vancouver? You Need Storage Space

Many people in Vancouver rent out their home for large portions of the year. This may be because you have travel plans, because you need to temporarily relocate for work or school or because you simply live in another house or apartment in the area. Regardless, if you are renting out your house, you may find that you have a lot more stuff than you can handle. This is where one of our Vancouver storage units can help. A storage unit is a cost effective solution to your space problems.

There are Drawbacks to Leaving Belongings In Your Home

If you decide to rent out your home, you may wish to leave some of your belongings within your house. While this can certainly be tempting, you need to consider the drawbacks of such an arrangement. First, depending on your prospective tenants this could make your property more difficult to rent. This means you could be left without a tenant for weeks or months longer than you expected. Alternatively, it might mean that you are forced to rent out your home for a lower rate. In this scenario, renting a storage unit may have actually saved you money. Further, leaving your belongings in your home is inherently risky. Of course you want to trust your tenant, but ultimately you will never know what happens when you are not there. You may not be able to get adequate insurance on all of the items you leave behind. It simply makes far more sense to rent storage space.

How to Select the Right Storage Facility?

There are many different storage facilities in the Vancouver area, and it is common to have trouble deciding which one is right you. When it comes time to select a facility, you need to ask yourself the following six important questions:

  1. Does the storage company have a good reputation?
  2. Is the location of the facility convenient for you?
  3. Does the facility offer the right size storage unit?
  4. How is the security at the facility?
  5. What are the facility’s access hours?
  6. Are the prices reasonable?

Attic or Basement? Here is Why You Still Need a Vancouver Storage Unit

Many people throughout the Vancouver region have an attic, a basement or both. If that applies to you, you may feel that a storage unit is unnecessary. After all, you have plenty of space available right at home right? Not so fast. Dark and damp places like basements and attics are simply not the appropriate spot to store many common items. In fact, if you store things in these spots, you risk serious damage or deterioration. The good news is that there is an easy and cost-effective alternative. You are much better off renting a climate controlled storage unit. This type of unit regulates both temperature and humidity. This is critically important as it ensures valuable items will be properly protected over the long haul.

Six Items That Should Always Be Kept in a Climate-Controlled Storage Unit

  • Furniture: Both wooden and leather furniture should always be stored in a climate controlled space. While plastic furniture will generally do fine in any spot, wood and leather is far more fragile. Moisture and extreme temperatures threaten the long-term integrity of furniture made out of either of these substances.
  • Appliances: The vast majority of appliances contain delicate mechanical parts deep inside of them. If these parts are exposed to moisture, they will soon begin to rust. Once rust starts to form inside an appliance, that appliance is going to malfunction in the near future.
  • Documents: All paper documents must be kept away from humidity. Paper is one of the most  fragile items you can store. It will begin to deteriorate very quickly if not kept in the right conditions. If you are storing important documents or records, please always keep them inside protective boxes and within a climate regulated space.
  • Antiques and collectable items: Many people rent storage space to keep their valuable antiques or other collections. This includes things like artwork, vases, comic books and stamps. By their very nature, all of these items are highly fragile. They must be kept away from moisture and high levels of heat.
  • Photographs: Your photos are truly priceless. Even in a world of digital pictures, there is still nothing quite like holding a physical copy of an important memory in your hand. Remember: these photos are delicate. Never store your photos in a basement or attic. If you want to keep those memories for the rest of your life, you need a climate controlled storage unit.
  • Electronics: The internal components of electronics are fragile. If you are storing electronics for the long-term, you need to keep them in a climate controlled space. Once again, your basement or attic will simply expose these items to too much risk. Even a fully furnished basement is usually a relatively humid and damp place.
