Storing Your Vehicle in Vancouver Over the Winter

Many people decide to store excess vehicles or their boats in storage during the winter in order to protect them from the cold weather. In preparing your vehicle to be stored, there are some important considerations to make (in addition to choosing the right storage location):

Pest prevention

Plug any exhaust pipes and intake valves in order to keep small animals out (using socks typically work). Also be sure to throw out any trash that has accumulated and could draw in pests. If you are worried about small animals making their way into the vehicle, placing drier sheets or mothballs inside the car can also serve as a deterrent. Avoid using mouse traps or anything else that could result in a dead animal being stored in your vehicle all winter long.

If you plan to steam clean the inside of the car, make sure you don’t do this right before storing it, as this can cause moisture buildup and mildew. If you are worried about moisture, leaving desiccant in the vehicle can help.

Cleaning

Cleaning and waxing your vehicle before storing it is very important in order to ensure that it stays protected for the winter. By getting rid of dirt and any tree sap, you help ensure that the paint is protected. It can also be helpful to use rubberized undercoating and spray a protective coat on any unpainted metal parts under your car, but make sure you do not use these materials near any exhaust pipes because they are flammable. It’s also a good idea to remove the windshield wipers so that they do not stick to the windshield, as well as invest in a quality car cover.

Do not use the emergency or parking brake during storage so as to avoid placing too much pressure to the brake pads and rotors. The parking brake could also end up freezing. Wedging wood blocks near the wheels can help if you are concerned about your vehicle rolling while in storage.

Fluids and Ventilation

It is important to top off all fluids, especially the gas tank, so that moisture does not build up while the vehicle is in storage. It’s also a good idea to change the engine oil before storing it and use fluid stabilizer to help prevent corrosion in the fuel lines and engine. It may also be wise to leave the window slightly cracked to allow for fresh air to circulate while the vehicle is in storage.

Tires and Battery

Make sure you increase the air pressure in your tires before you start the car, as tires lose pressure over time and due to temperature change. If you can get your car on a jack stand to take the pressure off the tires while it is in storage, that is ideal. Remember also to take the battery out before storing the vehicle so that it stays charged during the winter when the vehicle isn’t in use.
